In a dramatic turn of events, the National Capital Planning Commission voted 8–4 Thursday night to grant final approval

In a dramatic turn of events, the National Capital Planning Commission voted 8–4 Thursday night to grant final approval for President Trump’s proposed 250-foot-tall triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., clearing a major hurdle for the controversial project.

However, just hours after the approval, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a 14-day temporary halt on construction. The judge ruled that lawsuits filed by Washington, D.C., and Virginia raised serious legal concerns and that allowing construction to proceed could cause immediate harm.

Although the commission's approval initially cleared the way for construction to begin, the judge's ruling puts the project on hold for now as the legal challenges move forward.
