Pilot Analysis Points to Inexperience, Weather in Fatal Palm Beach Learjet Crash

GREENACRES, FLORIDA (VINnews) — A Learjet 60 carrying nine people plunged into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County on Sunday afternoon, killing everyone aboard after the crew reported icing, turbulence and a rapid, uncontrolled descent, officials said.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths and described the crash as a “horrific tragedy.” The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation.

Minutes before impact, the pilot told Miami air traffic controllers that the plane was encountering light clear ice that remained “manageable,” along with moderate turbulence that was jolting the aircraft by as much as 700 feet. The outside air temperature was reported near -47 degrees Celsius. After the crew noted precipitation and requested a climb, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Controllers heard a mayday call as the jet began descending at rates that quickly climbed past 10,000 and then 20,000 feet per minute while in an overspeed condition. Tracking data showed the aircraft dropping roughly 27,000 feet in about one minute before data ended.

Investor Bill Ackman shared an assessment on X from a pilot he described as trustworthy. The pilot said it was too early for definitive conclusions but that complacency and inexperience likely played a role, along with the weather. Based on air traffic control audio and radar imagery showing thunderstorm activity across the region, the pilot concluded the crew probably flew into the storms and accumulated ice.

The assessment noted that the Learjet has a particularly sensitive wing. If ice built up at high altitude in thin air, a power-on stall could result in an upset or snap roll. The request to climb suggested the engines were at a high power setting at the time. The pilot said investigators would examine whether the weather radar was operating, the crew’s training records and experience levels, any prior training difficulties, and factors such as fatigue in the days leading up to the flight. Video of the final moments appeared to show the aircraft intact until impact. Experienced crews, the pilot added, would not cross a line of storms while descending into them.

Scattered thunderstorms were active over South Florida at the time. The NTSB is expected to examine the wreckage, flight data, crew qualifications and weather conditions in the coming days. Identities of those aboard had not been released as of Sunday evening.
