A man was struck by a subway train at the Hewes Street station in Williamsburg on Monday afternoon and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital by FDNY EMS in critical condition with serious injuries.
The incident happened at about 3:43 p.m. at the station at Broadway and Hewes Street, which serves the J and M lines. A 911 caller reported that a person had been hit by a train, and emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Witnesses say the man was train surfing on the roof of the train. Police have not released his name or age.
Subway surfing has caused many tragic deaths across the city's transit system: six people died in 2024 and at least five in 2025, and in May a 14-year-old was killed riding on top of a J train on the Williamsburg Bridge.
