JetBlue Raises Checked Bag Fees Again, With Some Passengers Facing $70 Charges

NEW YORK (VINnews) – JetBlue is raising checked baggage fees for the third time in less than a year, as soaring fuel and operating costs put pressure on airline profits, according to CNBC.
Beginning with the latest fee changes, economy passengers will pay $50 for a first checked bag when booked more than 24 hours before departure during nonpeak periods, up from $45. The fee rises to $60 when paid within 24 hours of departure.
During peak travel periods, including summer and holidays, the first checked bag will cost $55 in advance and as much as $70 when purchased within 24 hours of departure.
JetBlue said the increases are intended to offset higher fuel and operating expenses while keeping base ticket prices competitive. Passengers with qualifying JetBlue credit cards or elite frequent-flyer status may be exempt.
The airline industry has faced mounting costs as jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since the Iran war began in February. Other major U.S. airlines have also raised baggage fees this year.
