Nine Killed After Learjet Crashes Near Greenacres
A Bahamas-bound Learjet 60 crashed Sunday afternoon in Palm Beach County, killing all nine people on board.
The private jet left Austin, Texas, headed for North Eleuthera. It went down around 12:50 p.m. near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in the Greenacres/Cresthaven area, leaving a large crater in the roadway and exploding on impact.
Crew reported light clear ice and moderate turbulence before declaring mayday and describing a rapid, uncontrolled descent. No one on the ground was injured.
NTSB officials said Monday there is evidence the plane began breaking apart in the air before impact. Investigators are still recovering wreckage and determining the cause. Military Trail remains closed in the area, and roughly 600 nearby residents were temporarily displaced.
