UK: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has unveiled revised immigration reforms
UK: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has unveiled revised immigration reforms, confirming plans to double the standard waiting period for permanent settlement in Britain from five to ten years.

Under the plans, the highest earners could qualify after just three years, while migrants who breach immigration rules would face a 20-year wait. Those entering illegally by small boat could face up to 30 years.
Following opposition from Labour MPs and trade unions, Mahmood has also reversed plans to make eligible care workers wait 15 years, allowing those who arrived before May 2025 and meet the required conditions to retain the five-year route.
Applicants will also face stricter English language, criminal record and financial requirements.
