US: Democrats have won control of both the Senate and House of Representatives in a sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump.
The party secured victories in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, South Carolina and Kansas, ending Republican control of Congress for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.
The result will allow Democrats to block much of Trump’s legislative agenda, challenge his appointments and launch investigations into his administration.
Trump congratulated the Democrats, saying they “did a good job”, and acknowledged that the war with Iran and rising fuel prices contributed to the Republican defeat.
