Democrat Cait Conley Defeats Congressman Mike Lawler, Flipping NY-17 Congressional Seat
Democrat Cait Conley has defeated Republican Congressman Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District, flipping the closely watched Hudson Valley seat following an intense campaign that attracted national attention.
The district, which includes all of Rockland County and portions of Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties, was among the congressional races closely monitored by both parties as they competed for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Conley, a U.S. Army veteran and former national security official, secured her first term in Congress after campaigning on affordability, healthcare, reproductive rights, and a change in congressional representation.
Her victory ends Lawler’s tenure in the House of Representatives, which began in January 2023 after he defeated Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney in the 2022 election. Lawler had subsequently won reelection in 2024 and entered the 2026 contest seeking another term.
Throughout the campaign, Lawler highlighted his work on affordability, public safety, immigration, support for Israel, and constituent services, while Conley sought to present herself as an alternative to the Republican incumbent.
Both candidates devoted considerable attention to Rockland County, meeting with voters, local officials, and community leaders. The county’s Orthodox Jewish community was among the constituencies receiving significant outreach during the election.
Conley’s victory represents a Democratic pickup in a competitive congressional district and changes Rockland County’s representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Conley will begin her two-year term in January 2027, when the new Congress convenes in Washington, D.C.
