Assemblyman Aron Wieder Wins Reelection, Defeats Rob Bonomolo in Rockland County's 97th Assembly District
Democratic Assemblyman Aron Wieder has won reelection to the New York State Assembly, defeating Republican challenger Rob Bonomolo and Conservative Party candidate Abraham Klein in the closely watched race for the 97th Assembly District.
Wieder, who was first elected to the State Assembly in November 2024 after defeating Republican incumbent John McGowan, secured another two-year term representing portions of Rockland County, including communities in Ramapo and Orangetown.
The race attracted considerable attention throughout Rockland County, particularly within the Orthodox Jewish community, as candidates competed for support in a district that includes some of the county’s largest and fastest-growing communities.
During his first term in Albany, Wieder focused on issues affecting local families, including education funding, child care assistance, affordability, and securing additional state resources for Rockland County. His campaign highlighted his relationships with state officials and his efforts to address the needs of local municipalities, schools, and community organizations.
Bonomolo, a construction union leader and Republican candidate, mounted a challenge centered on affordability, public safety, infrastructure, and the need for a different approach to representing the district in Albany.
The election also featured Conservative Party candidate Abraham Klein, who secured his party’s nomination after defeating Bonomolo in the June primary, creating a three-way general election contest.
Wieder’s victory allows Democrats to retain the 97th Assembly District seat and gives him another term in the New York State Legislature.
With the election concluded, Wieder will return to Albany when the new legislative session begins in January 2027, continuing to represent Rockland County residents in the State Assembly.
