Citibank Gunman Was Irate Over Court Summons For $2,500 Debt, Sheriff Says
The man who killed a Citibank employee at the company’s Brandon campus on Wednesday was angry about a court summons over a $2,500 delinquent payment, Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said Thursday.
Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando, called an attorney’s office contracted by
Citibank around 9 a.m. that morning.
He was upset about the summons and threatened violence if the case was not canceled, the sheriff said.
Pearson then drove roughly 90 miles to the Citibank Center near I-75 and MLK Boulevard. He crashed his car through a fence into an outdoor lunch area, got out with a rifle, and shot the first employee he saw.
The victim was identified as Leanne Selmon, 41, of Palm Harbor. She had worked at Citibank for nine years.
Pearson had about 90 rounds of ammunition with him. A Citibank security officer confronted him in the cafeteria and shot him. Pearson later died at the hospital. Four other people were injured.
Chronister credited the security officer with stopping further violence. More than 3,200 employees were on the campus at the time.
