A former RBC employee in Ottawa opened at least 43 fraudulent accounts and accessed Prime Minister Mark Carney's personal banking profile without permission.

He was recruited on Telegram by someone he believed was linked to organized crime, with $500 offered for each fake account. He also sent people's identity information, including online banking passwords, to that contact.

He accessed Carney's profile in June 2025, but the reports don't establish that Carney's details were shared or used to steal money.

The former employee pleaded guilty to fraud, identity theft and unauthorized use of a computer. He has not yet been sentenced and missed a recent sentencing hearing. A new date is set for later this month.
