Winter Is Around the Corner: NYC Council Takes Up Snow Removal Plans
With winter approaching, the New York City Council is turning its attention to how the city will handle snow removal during the upcoming season.
The Council’s sanitation committee is set to review the city’s winter storm preparations and snow-clearing operations, following a difficult winter earlier this year that brought heavy snow and extended periods of freezing temperatures.
Lawmakers are also expected to consider legislation that would require the Department of Sanitation to keep and publicly post historical street snowplowing records.
The city’s current PlowNYC system allows residents to check when their block was most recently cleared, but does not maintain a public history of previous plowing activity.
Supporters of the proposal say keeping those records available would give residents more transparency and make it easier to review how snow removal is handled across different neighborhoods.
The hearing comes as federal forecasters are calling for a warmer-than-average winter in the New York City area because of global warming conditions, although major snowstorms could still occur.
