On the Caribbean island of Curaรงao, Mikvรฉ Israel-Emanuel is the oldest synagogue still in continuous use in the Americas. Its sanctuary was dedicated in 1732, and the Sephardic community traces its roots back to 1651. No one knows exactly why the floor is covered with sand.
